Having worked in the FinTech community for a number of years now (on all sides of the ecosystem: accelerators, FinTechs, consulting, and Bank side) - it's clear that the cultural compatibility is the hardest nut to crack.

From a large institution's perspective, creating an environment where the pursuit of innovation is done in a safe environment that doesn't put the protection of the bank at risk is a difficult task. For a start-up, understanding these needs of their customers is about as frustrating as teaching your grandfather to programme their VCR...

What we need is more of us to walk the walk and engage fully in the startup ecosystem. It's incumbent on everyone who sees a future for the FinTech ecosystem to get involved at the grass roots level - joining accelerators and incubators as mentors and advisors. Only with this first hand experience available to tap into, will entrepreneurs be able to navigate the beasts that are their prospective customers - and will the DNA exchange start to deliver on the promise...
